NEWARK VALLEY- Waverly traded punches with Newark Valley in the first half, holding only a slim 7-6 lead. Waverly eventually landed knockout blows in the third quarter. The Wolverine offense went on a tear, running over and around the Cardinal defense, scoring 21 points in the quarter.
Defensively the Wolverines version of "Bloody Knuckles" paid off big as Cardinal ballcarriers had to trade yargdage for bruises the entire contest. The Wolverine defenders gang tackled and swarmed all afternoon, eventually capturing momentum and taking away hope of any Cardinal comeback.
With the win Waverly captures the Division title and will now move on to Sectional Championships in two weeks. The Wolverines have a single regular season contest at Lansing. Waverly will look to tune up for the play-offs against the Bobcats Friday night.
Waverly, as of late, appears to have found an identity on both sides of the ball. Offensively the Wolverines have found big play potential on the ground and thru the air, with the potential to score multiple times in any quarter. Defensively, Waverly is unwilling to surrender even a single first down. Wolverine defenders, committed to "TEAM" defense, rally to the ball and arrive in a bad mood as they work to extinguish any possible hope that any offense will reach the goal line.
With both sides of the ball now hitting their strides the Wolverines are poised to make a run into sectional play.
